Cheeky Chinchillas - Fictional Stories About Chinchillas 1

How to Change a Heart
By Heather

Once upon a time there was a young boy named Adam. Adam was a kind and loving boy, who took care of a small family of chinchillas in his home. He loved them dearly, but found that he had too many to take care of. His mother, understanding as she was, said that he only had to get rid of the young babies and to keep the mother and father separate. She knew her boy wanted to breed them someday.

The boy agreed it was for the best, since he only wanted his chins to be happy. He finally gave away all but one Chinchilla to nice and loving homes. Since all the people he knew well enough to give the lonely chinchilla away to, had one, he was at a loss for his last Chin. He wanted this Chinchilla to go some place where it was needed. At long last, he hit on an idea.

Within the small town, there was a ruthless man named Bogard. Though he wasn't old, his face was always locked in a grimace, his eyes reflecting nothing but an icy gaze of hate for those around him. He was known for being harsh and rude to all that crossed his path though none knew why. He'd always been that way. Bogard happened to be Adam's uncle. One day, Adam trudged up to his uncle's house and knocked on the door politely.
The man swung it open hastily, glaring at his nephew. 'What?' he demanded.

'Uncle...’ the boy said with a smile. 'I came to ask you a simple favor. Mother and I are going on vacation and I can't bring one of my pets. I was hoping you'd take care of him for me.'

'What makes you think I want vermin in my house?’ Bogard's voice was harsh but the boy stood unflinching.

The boy offered, 'It's only for a few days and I trust you with him.'

It took an entire hour of soft pestering, but the boy finally got his uncle to accept the Chin. He listed off the instructions and they picked up the Chinchilla's cage and supplies, moving it temporarily to Bogard's house. The mother found this idea horrendous, but the boy would not be deterred and so they set off for their trip.

Bogard treated the Chin very unkindly. Its name was Ali but he called it things like 'vermin', 'pest' and 'flea ridden creature'. Yet, every time the man walked by the door of the cage, the chinchilla would bounce up to greet him. Still, the man remained hardened as stone. The creature didn't mind. It rolled about and played in its enclosure, and even enjoyed a dust bath. It got to the point where Bogard would move his chair in front of the cage, rather than the fire to read. As the chinchilla was almost always doing something he found entertaining.

The boy had still not returned home but he had gotten word that their trip would be longer than they expected. Still the man would not give the creature treats or even say its name. Instead he merely watched at a distance. Yet every time he approached, to the man's confusion, it still greeted him kindly.

'Why do you like me? I don't even treat you well. Look, there's an entire box of treats and I haven't given you one!'

Still, the animal was kind to him.

Two days later, the man became worried. The chinchilla did not come to greet him when he offered food. Instead it remained lying at the back of the cage. Afraid it was dead; he opened the door to check on it. Never hearing any kind words or having the comfort of someone's love, it remained quietly in the back corner. The poor animal had become lonely and homesick. Its food bowl was full from the previous night.

Saddened that it was no longer happy or playing, the man began to stroke its fur and murmur soft words. Soon the Chinchilla was up and playing again and the man felt an odd emotion surface. He was happy. More and more, the man started to play with the Chinchilla, letting it out of its cage and handling it with care.

'Ali, you chewed up my shoe!' he said waving it with a grin at the creature. 'Good thing too, it was ugly!'

A change had overcome the man.
When his nephew called, Bogard answered the phone with a soft and happy voice.

'Ah Adam, how was your trip?'

'Fine... Uncle...’ the boy said slowly, a small smile starting to form.

'How's Ali?'

'That runt, he's dashing around like a madman. Looking for my shoe I guess.'

'Oh he likes those. Forgot to warn you,’ the boy said, his lips turning upward in a grin.
'You know, since we're back, we can take him off your hands, Uncle.'

The man paused on the phone.

'You know,' he said finally, 'I wouldn't mind keeping him here for a few days more while you guys get settled. I'm sure you have plenty to unpack.'

The boy agreed, a knowing smile on his face.
'Take good care of him Uncle.'

'I will.'

The Uncle never realized it, but the boy never came back for Ali, who the uncle secretly called John.
Bogard became well known throughout the town as the nicest man there.
All thanks to a friendly Chinchilla named John.
